Colistimethate Sodium Injection is a sterile, lyophilized antibiotic used to treat serious infections caused by multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria especially when other antibiotics no longer work. This includes infections like those caused by carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Colistimethate is a prodrug, which means it becomes active only after entering the body. Once inside, it changes into its active form called colistin. It is most often used in hospitals, especially in intensive care units (ICUs), when other treatment options have failed.
